Charlotte had the wine bottle between her legs, yanking to free the cork when her cell phone rang. Her head sagged forward, figuring it had to be Leigh, complaining about something. She put the bottle on her kitchen counter, glad she hadn’t had a drop to drink. She would bet a boatload of cash, a night in the hospital was in her future.

Not laying on her couch drooling drunk.

Except it wasn’t Leigh.

“Madison?” Hearing crying on the other end, Charlotte felt her heart start pounding. “Is everything all right?”

An hour later, Charlotte called Hans from her car.

“You’re what?” her assistant asked.

“Madison’s grandmother died!” She raced down the New Jersey Turnpike, her hair in a twist, her face all made up, and her favorite plum dress riding up her thighs.

“The ole ‘grandmother bites the dust’ excuse.” Hans gave a tsk, tsk, tsk. “Where have I heard that one before?”

Charlotte didn’t think for a moment Madison had bailed for another reason, killing off an already dead Nana. Announcements in the background about train platforms had suggested Madison was going somewhere. For something.

“I can’t let him show up at this dinner without a date. I talked him into going.” She checked the rearview mirror again to zip around cars content to crawl down the Turnpike. He would have been there for nearly thirty minutes by now. Alone.

“So why didn’t you just call and tell him she bailed? He would have been relieved.”

“Um.”

“Oh man! You wanted to be his date, didn’t you, Char? I can’t say I blame you.”

Ignoring the accusation, she said, “The man is up for an award. Either way, he should get it. He does amazing work in Trenton. He deserves a night to be celebrated.”
